Craft Beer Label Design
Most breweries have a story behind every beer. Sometimes the story has a mission, sometimes it's simply a goof. No matter the purpose, my process begins by understanding how the idea came to light and asking
“How can we make this more than just a beer label?
Over the years I’ve explored, designed, and helped launch hundreds of beers with all types of
artwork styles. From mascots to landscapes, to pattern heavy designs to detailed
line-work, I don't subscribe to a specific style. I helped build sub-brands such as “Don’t Fuck
It Up!”, a low impact ale that bring awareness to water conservation efforts, and “Dirty Hop
Water”, a series devoted entirely to the music that fuels the brew team.
Regardless of the style or purpose, the artwork is always in vector format, ensuring that either
the artwork, pattern, word-mark, or iconography can easily be repurposed for
merchandising.
The creativity within the craft beer industry goes hand in hand with illustrative design or
collaborating with artists, and if you are a brewpub who does not need to fight for shelf space,
you have the opportunity to ensure your labels are as unique as your beers.
